Chapter 6

THE FOLLOWING MORNING, Tamara had to calm herself with a deep breath before leaving her room. Ryan hadn't returned until after she had gone to bed. She wanted to get the apology over with and had waited up for him for a while after dinner. It wasn't until she was in bed that she heard his car pull in and his footsteps in the hallway.

Could she do it in front of Stephen and Anna? What if he gave her no other choice?

“Good morning, dear.”

Apparently, Tamara was the last one to arrive this morning. Ryan was already shoveling in eggs and drinking coffee in big gulps.

“Good morning.” Tamara nodded at Stephen and Anna. Ryan didn't look up.

“I have the keys for your car,” Stephen said and nodded towards the reception. “And the bill.”

Tamara hadn't even thought to check if her car was in the parking lot yesterday, she had been so intent on apologizing to Ryan.

“Thanks.” Tamara placed food on her plate.

“We were just telling Ryan here how nice it's been to have just the two of you here to start off with,” Anna said.

“We have a sizable group coming in late tonight. It's two families. Four adults and three kids.”

Tamara sat down and poured herself some coffee. “Sounds like you'll have your hands full then.”

“Oh, I'm sure we'll manage. We just have to cook more food.” Anna smiled and put a hand on Stephen's.

“We were hoping you wouldn't mind if dinner is a bit later tonight. They'll be arriving fairly late and will want dinner.”

“Of course,” Tamara glanced at Ryan, who was focusing on his food. “I don't mind at all.”

The table went silent, waiting for Ryan. He looked up at Anna and Stephen. “I'll be happy to have dinner later.”

“Oh, good.” Anna continued eating. “I have to admit I'm a little nervous. It's just me and Stephen here. I keep worrying that we've bitten off more than we can chew.”

Stephen waved a hand. “We'll be fine.”

“Running a B&B is our dream, but there's a lot of work that goes into it.”

“Well, if there's anything I can do, just let me know.” Tamara tried to keep an eye on Ryan's plate to make sure he wouldn't run away from her again. He was almost finished.

“That's sweet of you, dear,” Anna said.

“Ryan, can I talk to you.” Tamara stopped him just as he was about to get up.

“Sure. Thank you for the breakfast.” Without looking at her, he left the room.

Tamara followed him out to the foyer and almost bumped into him as he suddenly stopped and turned.

“What?” His voice was a strange mixture of dejection and anger.

“I wanted to apologize to you.” Tamara took a deep breath. “I overreacted in the car yesterday and I'm sorry.”

His face softened.

Tamara continued. “I guess I get defensive when it comes to my family. And I never stopped to think about what it was like for you.”

Ryan nodded. “I appreciate that.”

“I don't know if things can ever change between our families, but I would like them to.
